John F. McCarthy
Central Coast Employment Attorney- John McCarthy
Locally Grown. Fiercely Protective.
I’m John McCarthy, founder of Central Coast Employment Law. I was born and raised here on California’s Central Coast. My roots run deep in this community—and so does my commitment to fighting for people who’ve been wronged at work.
From a young age, my family taught me that hard work, fairness, and standing up for what’s right matter more than anything. Those values still guide me every day as a lawyer.
Early in my legal career, I represented large agricultural employers right here on the Central Coast. It was valuable experience—I learned how big companies think, how they defend lawsuits, and how they justify decisions that hurt real people.
But here’s the truth:
Working for big employers didn’t open my eyes to how regular workers are treated—it confirmed it. And it pissed me off.
I’d always believed in fairness and fighting for the underdog. Seeing how some companies treated their workers—especially when they thought nobody was watching—made me determined to switch sides. So I did.
I left defense work, moved to San Diego, and started my own law practice dedicated to helping workers. It was a scary move, but it turned out to be the best decision of my life. Over the years, I built a national reputation fighting for employees in cases involving whistleblower retaliation, wrongful termination, harassment, discrimination, and wage theft.
Home Is Where the Heart Is
Even while I was building my practice in San Diego, the Central Coast always felt like home. My wife and I wanted to raise our daughter surrounded by the same community values and natural beauty we grew up with. So we came home.
Returning to the Central Coast wasn’t just a personal choice—it was a professional one, too. I saw a huge need for workers here to have someone local, experienced, and fierce in their corner. I’m proud to bring national experience and local knowledge together to help people right here where I grew up.
How I Work
I’m known for telling it like it is.
I believe people deserve the truth—even if it’s hard to hear. I’ll always be honest about whether you have a case, what it might be worth, and what it will take to fight it. If I can help you, I’ll fight like hell. If I can’t, I’ll help point you in the right direction.
Employment law can be complicated, but I’ll explain things in plain English. I want every client to feel informed, empowered, and never left in the dark.
You Don’t Have to Go It Alone
Losing your job, facing harassment, or being pushed out of your workplace can feel devastating. I’ve seen firsthand how it affects people’s health, finances, and families. That’s why my practice isn’t just about the law—it’s about giving people hope, a voice, and a path forward.
Most of my cases are handled on a contingency basis. You don’t pay me anything upfront. I only get paid if we win. That way, everyday workers can take on big employers without worrying about how to afford a lawyer.
Outside the Office
When I’m not working, you’ll find me hiking in Big Sur, cruising through the vineyards in Paso Robles, or spending time with my family. I’m also deeply involved in community causes and local organizations. Giving back to the Central Coast is one of the most important things in my life.
